The Siuslaw Institute, Inc, was founded in 1994 as a locally-based, not-for-profit organization, dedicated to the “sustainable improvement of community and habitat in the Coast Range of Oregon, particularly in the Siuslaw River Basin.”
In its initial prospectus, the Institute outlined an ambitious statement of goals and activities embodied in its mission:
“It shall be the purpose of this Institute to engage in programs of research, education, action, monitoring and communication designed to restore, enhance and utilize the watersheds of the Coast Range of the Pacific Northwest in ways that will protect biological diversity, conserve natural resources and habitat, and contribute to the sustainable improvement of human society.”
Throughout this initial period of development and action, we have tried to be mindful of the advice embodied in our motto:
“If you’re building something to last, you don’t have to hurry.”
At the same time, we have tried to be involved in as many relevant activities as have been presented to us as opportunities for fulfilling our purpose.
